The Mid Engined Turbo Triumph Spitfire

Mid Engined Triumph Spitfire Audi 1.8 Turbo 400 bhp 685 kg

The Beginning

I bought a very sad 1978 car it looked like it had been in a scrap yard forever, as it turns out it had been there for 10 years, slowly rotting away, the floor, sills rear wings/fenders and the bulkhead had gone.

The chassis was good, there were no doors or bonnet and the car had been stripped, totally. It came with an engine and gearbox..  but no accessories, electrics, steering, brakes, suspension ….

I got it home, and started working on replacing all the steel, I didn’t want to buy off the shelf panels so i made everything from sheet steel

I also started fitting the engine it slotted nicely where the differential would normally fit in a Spitfire. The engine is a 1.8 20v turbo Audi unit and gearbox. I fitted the gearbox to a 3.2fsi Audi Quattro rear subframe, bought some Audi drive shafts, and the whole thing just came together. I built a frame around the engine to give it more rigidity, for the rear suspension I fitted 2 Lotus Elise shock absorbers.

The body fitted snugly over the engine, I lost no legroom. All i have lost is the little rear shelf that sits behind the drivers chair,

The cooling pipes, brake pipes, fuel lines, gear selector cables and electrics run through the middle of the chassis, wheer once the prop shaft fitted.

I eventually bought 2 doors and a bonnet from eBay, the wheels are awful but they keep it off the ground and allow me to wheel it around.
