I liked the cobbled together system I had, but it did not look neat, and the diameter of the pipe was too small, apparently these 1.8T 20v engines need a minimum of 3\u201d to reduce back pressure and allow the turbo to spool up faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the exhaust project started\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First step was to draw it out and buy the parts, to my surprise just the raw bits to make the exhaust were really expensive, well over \u00a3300, just the 340 stainless steel sheet t make the silencer \/ muffler box was \u00a363. I had been given two 4\u201d carbon fibre exhaust tips for a bit of bling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-1152x2048.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.nickt.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/77B1D70B-B135-4087-BF6E-BD30BCC6B4BE-scaled.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhaust box itself has 3 chambers, the first, on the exhaust inlet has a perforated tube running through that is wrapped with glass exhaust dampening, the exhaust then travels through the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> chamber in a solid pipe to the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> where it hits a wall of glass wool dampening, there is an open in that chamber\u2019s wall to the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, centre chamber where the 2 exit pipes are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was going to try and TIG weld the exhaust, but either my TIG is useless, or I just cannot TIG, I suspect it is the latter. So, I used stainless steel MIG using .8mm wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The downpipe from the turbo comprises of a V Band at the turbo, then a short 3\u201d pipe with two <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/sch\/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p2060353.m570.l1313&amp;_nkw=o2+sensor+bung&amp;_sacat=0\" target=\"_blank\">O<sup>2<\/sup> sensor <\/a>bungs, one for the engine and one for a future gauge. Then it was just a case of tack welding the seams of the box\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the box has 3 compartments, I had to make 4 profile sections the same shape as the wooden templates I had made earlier. The first and 2<sup>nd<\/sup> has a 3\u201d hole cut in them, the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> has 2 3\u201d holes cut through, there was also a sheet of perforated steel for the last chamber (to hold the glass through pipe, I started with a short section of solid 3\u201d tube, that welded to the perforated tube, and that welded to a further sheet of solid tube. Then all ground down to form a seamless tube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex Once cut, I slotted the tailpipes in the holes and made the connecting pipes from box to tips.
